Here's a round-up off the YuGiOh! Cayman Open National Championship 2010 held at GameShack on 22nd May 2010:
The tournament kicked off at around 1pm with 9 players (2 or 3 other registrants couldn’t make it on the day due to other commitments) and the initial rounds were played under the Swiss scoring system, with each player being paired against one another in accordance with the software pairing utility. Four rounds of Swiss were played, each round the pairings were based on similar win/loss records as the tournament progressed. Each round was a best-of-3 match (i.e. the first person to win 2 games wins the match). Due to the odd number of players, a random player was given a bye during each round. A final cut of 8 to progress to the single-elimination rounds was decided after a play-off for 8th place between Jason Thomas and Dominic da Costa. Jason triumphed, winning 2 games in succession. With the 8 players lined up against each other, the single-elimination (sudden death) rounds began. Josh Myren and Kyle Parsons were drawn together and this promised to be one of the top matches for this round, since Kyle had won all 4 of his Swiss rounds (100% wins) and Josh, the odds-on unofficial tournament favourite, had lost a match against the same opponent in round 3 and had 3 wins under his belt. But this time there was no stopping Josh and he eventually triumphed over Kyle and moved on to the semi-finals. Kyle, gracious in defeat, would get his revenge another day. With Brandon da Costa up 1 game against George Rankine, Brandon had to forfeit his match (he had to make the baseball playoffs!). So George advanced to the last 4, along with Ashvin Murugesu and Rhett McCoy, who won their matches against Karem and Jason. With mounting tensions we watched the final 4 do battle and it was a triumph for Josh and Ashvin, who would now battle each other in the final to see who would be the Cayman Open National Champion and win that terrific trip to the Latin American Championships in Guadalahara, Mexico! Everyone huddled around the table to see the guys face off each other. Game 1 went to Josh after Ashvin dealt some terrific attacks to reduce Josh’s life points from 8000 to 700 - one more attack from Ashvin could have won him the game, but Josh counter-attacked with some great play of his own to take the game and the advantage. Josh did, however, make an accidental illegal procedure, which resulted in an official Warning being handed out by the floor judge. With so much at stake, could nerves be getting to the players? In the second game and Josh & Ashvin are firing on all cylinders, both players dishing out damage punch-for-punch, but Josh makes some great play again to cut Ashvin’s life points significantly. With victory looming for Josh, disaster strikes! Josh makes a second illegal procedure which resulted in an automatic game loss! One game apiece! The tension was electrifying! Could Josh buckle under the pressure? Who would take the title? Ashvin was playing the match of his life and Josh was fending off some great gameplay from his adversary. The winner would be the one who would hold his nerve and not make any mistakes. Game on and the third game was a see-saw of card plays, with the whole gamut of monsters, spells and traps being unleashed. One more procedural error from Josh would cost him the match and the title! With sweat pouring from his brow Josh was on the point of yet another procedural error but caught himself just in time. This time there were no further mistakes and Josh eventually ran out the winner 2-1 to take the title Cayman National Open Champion and that trip to Mexico.
We wish to thank all the players who turned up for the tournament to make it a great success. Everyone had a great time and they all walked away with a Championship Game Mat and a set of Championship deck sleeves (to be given to the players when the distributor manages to send us some!) The top four also got a YuGiOh! card binder and invites to the Latin American Championship in Mexico.
Let's hope we can build on this experience and host a terrific World Championship tournament in 2011! And of course all the other Yu-Gi-Oh! tournaments we'll be holding in between!
